About WebP to JPEG conversion
WebP is a modern format developed by Google that offers excellent compression, but not all software supports it. JPEG is the most widely compatible image format. If you downloaded an image from a website and it saved as .webp, converting to JPEG makes it usable everywhere.
When to convert WebP to JPEG
You saved an image from a website and it downloaded as a .webp file. Now you need to attach it to an email, paste it into a Word document, or upload it to a platform that does not accept WebP. This is the most common reason people convert WebP to JPEG.
WebP was designed for the web and offers good compression, but support outside of browsers is still inconsistent. Many desktop applications, older phones, and document editors cannot open WebP files. JPEG, on the other hand, works everywhere.
If your WebP image has transparent areas, they will be filled with a white background in the JPEG. JPEG does not support transparency. For images where you need to keep transparency, consider converting to PNG instead.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a WebP file?
- WebP is an image format created by Google, designed for the web. It offers smaller file sizes than JPEG and PNG while maintaining similar quality. Most websites use WebP to load pages faster.
- Why can't I open my WebP file?
- Many older applications and some operating systems don't support WebP natively. Converting to JPEG solves this — JPEG is supported by virtually every device and application made in the last 30 years.
- What happens to transparency in my WebP?
- JPEG does not support transparency. Any transparent areas in your WebP will be filled with a white background. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
- Will the file be larger or smaller?
- It depends on the quality setting. At the default quality of 85, the JPEG will often be similar in size to the WebP. Lower quality produces smaller files; higher quality produces larger ones.
- Is my file stored on your servers?
- Files are kept only long enough for you to download the result. Everything is automatically deleted within 24 hours. We do not store, share, or analyze your images.
